Renowned in the world for its traditions of Chan (Zen),Medicine and Martial Arts, the Shaolin Temple is not only one of the excellent emblems of traditional Chinese culture, but also one of the humanity’s cultural inheritances for its authenticity, singularity and uniqueness, therefore of a worldwide influence. Founded in 1217, the Medical Bureau of Shaolin Temple, reputed as the ‘Origin of Chinese Buddhist Medicine’, has developed its unique system of Buddhist medicine and pharmacy thanks to the incessant studies and effort by many a generation of accomplished monks, which is now literally summarized as‘three therapies and seven approaches’.

Initiated by the Shaolin Temple in May 2011, the China Summit Forum of Buddhist Medicine has already known six editions which have gathered experts, specialists, scholars and academicians all around the world to have discussions and exchanges on major medical issues, of which the collected papers and academic journals, once published, have received unexceptional recognition from professionals, inland and abroad alike. Buddhist medicine and pharmacy, with its thousand years of history, has seen a new day to the benefits of the whole society. This year’s Forum, on the occasion of the 8th Centenary of the Foundation of the Medical Bureau of Shaolin Temple as well as the implementation of the Law of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Pharmacy, is endeavoring to contribute to the revival of the research and studies on traditional Chinese pharmacy. We hope that our gathering here can bring more new ideas and a wider horizon to the development of traditional Buddhist medicine and pharmacy, and make our own contribution to the well-being of mankind.

The main theme for this year’s Forum as well as its seminar is designated as the Inheritance and Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine & Pharmacy, with which your paper is kindly required to keep aligned.
